Dear diary
Today I’m very happy. My Brazilian friend Carolina sent me an e-mail and said she is coming to visit me in summer holiday. So I’m already thinking about what to do with her because I hope we will have lots of fun. Do you have any suggestion? I know I have much time to prepare everything but things are not easy and I must think how to do interesting activities without spending much money. I want to show her how teenagers live in Europe. We have lots of old historical monuments to see but I’m afraid that she will find it a little bit boring. And what about food? Does she like Mediterranean food? I hope so. I’m very anxious to present her to all my friends and I almost can’t wait for her arrival.

Aris @ Rafaela

Oh god i am at school instead of my bed :P i got my hot chocolate here and trying to write about the economic crisis oh well let's start :P
The last three years a lot of changes happened in our lives. Especially now, the situation is even harder because of the new economical measures. Our parents are more worried about how to pay bills .The wage cuts have affected their psychology enough. As a result there is a lot of anger  at home. We, as young people, have made sizeable efforts to reduce our expenses, but it is not easy because we are used to a different lifestyle and have the cost of private lessons. We don’t know how to deal with that situation. There are young people who are aware and trying to help, as possible their families. However there are many students  who have not understood what is going on around them.
I saw on TV something that really shocked me. A year ago the families who did not have the essential goods were 540,000 and within a year they rose to 700,000. It is shocking in the 21st to make rations in schools. Also it is shocking to see children fainting from hunger .We have lived similar situations during the Second World War in Greece and now we face it again . As Greeks, what can we do about this ? It 's so painful to see your country that  has influenced  so much other civilizations to be destroyed in this way. And our future is hanging in the hands of people who care only about their own interests: greek politicians. We study 12 years at school, 4 years in university and in the best state we will end up is working for  400 € or in the worst even without work. This is the current situation in Greece.
People in Greece are  miserable and they suffer not knowing what the future holds for tomorrow. You get to a point to say instead of '' live'' saying '' survive''. At the end of each day Greek men and women think when they getting  to bed '' I did it and today.''

Ohh i feel depressed writing about the crisis :P i think i will go home to dress up and go to my friends see ya next time :)))

Aloha marafiki ! (try to find what does it mean)

Oh, although I wanted to be in the latin dance lessons making a better body for the next summer ,I am to school eating my favorite biscuits waiting for a good idea to jump in my mind in order to write to Lis Diary..ohhh god I am counting down the time for the night ….Oceanis, my favorite club is waiting for me and my friends  to dance, drink and have fun!!
However, my whole life isn’t a party! The schools of Greece send SOS for the increase of school violence. According to surveys, Greece has the 4th place among 41 countries in cases of bullying (violence in schools) . The silence that covers these incidents must be broken and I and my peers should be protected as soon as possible! The financial crisis  that exist in my country has caused plenty of problems in our families such as irritation, concern about our future and the most important... smile has already disappeared from all of the Greek people. Sadly, all of these problems are passed from the family to the children. The result is that students indicate family problems to the school with violent actions against to their classmates or to the school buildings. I decided to write about this social problem since a similar accident happened to my school!:( A student of the high school attacked to a younger student when he offended him. Although the older student should have complaint to the headmaster ,he preferred to solve the problem with violence. According to experts’ opinion, the first step to give an end to this problem is to face its seriousness. This sudden spate of violence that has flourished in the past couple of years, is a nasty social problem which just not frighten us for our physical and mental health, but also  worries us about the future of the whole country!

But, let’s stop now I have to go home and find something really fascinating to wear in order to impress!!

I’m reeeaalyy bored..I would prefer watching videos on my computer about the political situation in Mars than writing texts for lis diary
But its not up to me, bc my teacher is ready to pull the trigger of a kalaznikof and kill me.
Or at least hit me…REALLY HARD. Just like it happened the other day at school where  a kid (a little younger than me) hit another kid, at the same age, because he missed a the ball at the game. The thing that really made me think deeper is the fact that that the first kid used the nationality of the other one as an insult (almost wrote inslut :P).
So the question is what made the kid use that word as an insult? What is happening in my country the last years?
ELECTIONS
MAY – JUNE 2012
Recenlty there were elections held in Greece via which a fascist party got into the Greek parliament with a percentage of about 6%. That means that 6% of the greek population thinks that the basic problem of the crisis in greece is the immigrants either legal or illegal and they just hate them…and hate them.!!
In Plomari that phenomenon has not got that intense. For example kids from Albania or Romania e.t.c play and get along with greek kids just like if they were greek. But there is something small that if we just let it grow, it will grow big and finally become a huge problem really difficult to solve. And that problem is called racism…
Trying to give a modern definition of the word "Racism", we would say that is used to point a group, as stronger than others. More specifically describes the actions of a group of people (who share common characteristicts such as nationality, sex, color, religion, culture e.t.c) against one other group. The word comes from the most common type of racism, the racial racism, from the Italian word, "razza" which means race.
Racism is a sensitive topic that needs a lot of attention. According to experts, racism is considered a violation of the basic human right to equality, in the fields of labor, politics, the economy e.t.c.
In Greece, there have been all kinds of racism.Today the racial racism is expressed increasingly loud. The cause of this? Based on the fact that Greece "hosts" more immigrants than it can afford. The problem lies in the fact that the Greek would be taxed, will serve in the military, while the foreigners won’t.
It’s worth having in mind that it is no immigrant’s fault. In fact, immigrants are people who have searched for a better future in a foreign country. So did the Greek immigrants abroad. No one has the right to blame them for this. The problem is purely governmental. Quite simply if you need to get along both Greeks and foreigners in this country, we  will have to contribute all the same, otherwise prosperity wil be lost for both Greek and foreigners. Specifically there’s a need to adjust the rights. Otherwise there will be consequences, that in their simple form they lead to a devaluation of a group of people, while in more severe form, can give birth to the causes of terrorism or even war. It sounds extreme, however it has re-occurred in the past.
As students this phenomenon causes us regret and concern about the outcome of this situation. Finally we feel despair about the inaction of the Government in relation to this phenomenon.
..........................................................................................................................................      So, mister......!! The gun changed target and moved to the teachers head, not believing how a 16 year old kid could write such beautiful, amazing, deep thoughts.!!!

St. Martin's day | Chancellor Merkel comes to Portugal

Yesterday, my family and I celebrated St. Martin's day. In Portugal, the tradition is called magusto.

I filled myself with chestnuts though I haven't drunk any água-pé (I'll explain it later). What about you: how did you celebrate St. Martin's day?
Incidentally, St. Martin's day is celebrated on the Armistice day (which took place at the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918), but let's talk about a happier subject...

Today, Germany's chancellor Angela Merkel took a visit at our delightful country. I think it was an amazing opportunity to develop the economic relationship between creditor and debtor! :P As for the demonstrations in Lisbon, I agree with a spokesman from the government I saw on the news: their attitudes were dishonourable towards the trust Germany gives to Portugal, translated on the investment in car industry, etc; that way, the German chancellor and our prime minister replied were tactful, saying the liberty of expression, just like transit freedom has taken place in the European Union, is essential in democracy -- it's their way to see things and it can't be taken personally, although the PM is aware of it.

Ok, I really wanted to tell you more of it, but it happens that I'm feeling a bit drowsy, so... buh-bye, see you next time!

THE EARTHQUAKE

Have you ever "heard" an earthquake? When it starts to shake the floor or the chair you are sitting and the desk in front of you, there is a moment of consternation. You look out to search for the cause of all this "topple". When you see the furniture dangling and crockery clink and fall we realize that the earth trembles. The first impulse is to run out! But the regulations require to find a refuge or a safe place at home! Under a table, under a supporting beam, on the stairs. And everything continues to shake. With your heart in your throat and feel completely disoriented you begin to hear the shouts of terror coming from the neighboring houses, from those on the street who see to fall  next the pieces of roof or walls or windows. When you finally get to go out, also to share the panic that has paralyzed us now, we meet the shoes  just leave during the race, men and women dressed in pajamas or underwear have left their homes, children crying in the arms of mothers or relatives who do not shout  because the children shout stronger. And then you look to the sky ... and the sky- line of your  city has changed whole: the dear bell in half, the highest buildings without facades, churches without roofs of millennia! You look inside and you don’t find  your identity!

young 2012

What future for our young? Young has always been synonymous of project, strength, beauty, vehemence, passion, generosity, curiosity, altruism. Young people represent the future of a country in the world. If young people are strong, beautiful, impetuous, generous, inquisitive, prepared with cultured intelligence, we will have asustainable and livable future that will create a generation in turn similar to its own and the world will continue to be beautiful and well-lived.
What has happened to our generation to remove our young people the hope of the future? Globalization, consumerism, led to the invasion of Total Finance. The global market has needed more and more to grow up and the whirlwind that has involved so many have left the moral need for an proper education and clever. The God Money has replaced  in so many political sense of the State. It made the essential needs  inappropriate. The social climbing  has made many cynical and selfish. The corruption has become a "system". The ideals of integrity and service have been trampled upon and laughed.
To young people outside only have to "consume" and search in fatuous their needs. The empty spaces left by the family are not compensated by the school. The school from to be towes has become a soma ! Does not fill the methodological differences of learning! The "born digital" living in a school obsolete trudging propose targets boring and not recognized. Families fill in the blanks from their presence with cyber spaces and virtual reality that cancel. All this would lead us to an empty future without a project for young people who are still beautiful, will rediscover their strengths and their impetuosity, will agree the passion, become generous, awaken their curiosity and realize that culture has more of the virtual .That is good to live and savoring the world. That the heat of his friend and family can heat more than cold play station!
It will generate new younger more beautiful, stronger, etc. ............!

THE MASSACRE AT SCHOOL

We are  really living in a world where  the most pressing morality is the abuse and the uncivilized living together? The past has not left us heritage of morality, culture of earned trust in others and in the future? We destroyed everything for basic needs and not respect and love? we had not yet seen in Italy a terrorist attack on a school. An attack designed to kill. It was just a coincidence that died only one a young girl and not  other seriously injured. The attack was prepared for a muss murder. But a massacre of our children, a massacre of the future, an incomprehensible massacre. The organized crime or terrorists, or crazy have shown that there is nothing inviolable! I hope that this act erodes a bit of indifference that is covering at least in appareance our young people and forces them to take back their lives and claim it against everything and against everyone!

French Team in Portugal:

The french team arrived to Portugal on the 20th of April. On the 23rd of April, in the afternoon, we all met in Vila Praia de Âncora. They were welcome in the train station by members of the portuguese team. Then we had a nice walk on the beach and some  the cold waters of north of Portugal. Unfortunately there was no sun during their stay.
On the next day they met the local authorities in Caminha and Vila Praia de Âncora and lunched with the portuguese team in the school canteen. In the afternoon they went on a bus tour trough Vila Praia de Âncora, Caminha, Moledo, Vilar de Mouros and Dem.
The 25th of April was a public holiday in Portugal that celebrates Carnation Revolution that ended dictatorship. It was a day spent with the portuguese. There was a lot of different programs in the morning but we all met in Viana do Castelo. In the evening we all had dinner in the restaurant.
In 27th of April they visited Oporto, a beautiful city in north with a lot to see.
It was a good time spent with a different culture that we got to know by being with them. We all made new friends that intend to keep.

Maias’s Legend

Camp of gorse (maias).
In Portugal there is a tradition of placing branches / crowns with gorse (yellow flowers) in the locks of the doors and windows of homes during the night of April 30th to May 1st.
According to legend, known as the "Lenda Das Maias", this was used by Jews to identify the house where Jesus Christ, still a baby, and his family spent the night, when they tried to escape death decreed by Herod. In the next morning, inexplicably, all the doors at that location had a bunch of Maias in their locks, making it impossible to  the soldiers of Herod to identify where Jesus was. According to this legend is born a old ritual that we can still find all over the country but mainly in the northern localities. They also say that putting gorse (known in many places  by Maias, due to blooming usually in May) on the doors locks and windows defends the house and prevents all evil that try to invade the house.
In northern Portugal, there is an old game. Parents of unmarried girls put  crowns on the highest point of the house so boys can steal them overnight. Those who managed to have a chance of getting the crowns, can have the girl, they fail when are caught by the parents.

Door adorned with gorse.

Looking back to the Dublin meeting

Hello from the Irish Team

We've been a bit quiet since the Dublin meeting but now that we look forward to the next phase of the project and Plomari maybe it's good to have a quick look back at that meeting. The slideshow below might remind you of some of the work we did together but there are big gaps too and these are just a few "snaps" (low quality pictures) to remind us of our time together. What was your best memory of our meeting? What did you think of the Lord Mayor? There is a lot missing from these: what would you add to complete the picture? The Guinness (for some) and some nice pictures were already posted. But what else?

Here is an example video (again of low quality) but it may remind us of the meeting. Do you remember the skirts outside the Dail after our visit there? What was that about? Do you remember the debate in the parliament when we were there? And the information given by the guide? And the demonstration by student teachers?

Remember the Science Gallery or Trinity College Dublin? Did you know that 14 April 2012 is the 80th anniversary of the first experiment EVER to confirm the most famous equation of all?
E = what? The experiment was done by an Irish scientist. Or what about your trip to the World Heritage site at Newgrange or the monastic site at Glendalough? So sad we couldn't go with you :(
Maybe you'd like to look around Ireland again? There are many other special places.

What are your own memories? Can you tell us? Can you share some pictures or videos?
And looking back what was good about our meeting? What could we improve on for the next time?

We'll post more soon: we are all back in school on Monday after our 2 week Easter break.
Irish students will have a lot to post about then.                 Bye for now.

Here in Portugal classes started on Tuesday. I have to start studying for tests and doing works! Well, is not that bad… but I have two exams in the end that are very important for any student in my grade. There are people highly intelligent like Heidi Hankins, a four year girl with a 159 IQ, one less than Stephen Hawking, that could do everything I do easily, but I don’t have any problem with my capabilities and I think that what matters is improving them and face challenges.
This week astronomers found a very interesting rock formation in Mars. Guess what… an elephant! I have to admit I saw the photograph and it actually seemed like an elephant but see for yourself.
Good news… Kasabian are coming to Portugal to the festival Paredes de Coura! It’s near the place I live which is very good; I have to buy the tickets…  I really want to see them live!
Tell us how was your week! ;)
